In some cases, they can be symptoms of underlying health conditions such as liver diseases, kidney diseases, blood pressure among others.

Types of nose bleeds

Nose bleed are of two types: anterior which originates from the front of the nose.

This type is related to most nose bleeds and the other one is posterior which originates from the back of the nose. It ordinarily occurs in elderly people.

This condition can occur at any age of an individual but are more common in children aged 2 to 10 years, pregnant women and adults aged 50 to 80 years.

What remains unknown is the reason why nose bleeds mostly occurs in the morning hours. The fact that it is less painful and how it flows out unexpectedly remains mysterious.

Causes of nose bleeds

There are many causes that can lead to nose bleeding but there are some which are commonly known.

According to American Heart Association (AHA), health conditions can lower the ability of the blood to clot and can therefore cause one to nose bleed, a situation that may be accompanied by severe headache, shortness of breath and anxiety.

Cold, allergies and frequent nose-blowing can also irritate lining of the nose resulting into the bleeding of the nose.

Ear barotrauma also known as airplane air, a condition that causes ear discomfort when you experience pressure change such as altitude change is another suspected cause of nose bleeds.

How to avoid nose bleeds

Keep children’s finger nails short to inhibit them from nose picking particularly when you are not at their close watch. This helps in reducing nose bleeding caused by such injury to the nose from the finger nails.

Smoking dries out the nose and also irritate it. It is, therefore, advisable for anybody with epistaxis to quit the habit.

Also stabilize the drying effect of indoor heated air by using a humidifier at night in the bedroom if possible.

Opening the mouth when sneezing is another practice that can help one keep off from nose bleeding.

Home treatment of nose bleeding

In most cases when our friends or relatives experience nose bleeding we give them first aid by laying them facing upward, placing a wet piece of cloth on their fore head to prevent further bleeding.

This is wrong and may bring further complications to the victim as blood may flow back to the stomach causing the person to vomit. or worse enough, the blood may go back to the brain and end up creating a clot.

First aid

The safest way to give first aid to the person is by keeping them seated and leaning forward.

Use direct force to stop bleeding by pressing the nostrils shut for at least 10 minutes thus breathing through the mouth.

One may place a wet piece of clothing to the person at the fore of back head and discourage the individual from swallowing blood in case it comes to the mouth.

Nose bleeding can lead to massive blood loss from a person’s body if it occurs regularly. Excessive loss of blood will automatically lead to anemia and general body weakness.

People who frequently experience nose bleeding should seek specialized medical attention and treatment in a bid to establish the underlying problem.
