Gum tissue is a layer of the skin covering the bone tissue on the maxilla (upper jaw) and the mandible (lower jaw).
Gum recession occurs when the gum around the tooth margin pulls back covering less of the tooth or the tooth’s root and making it more susceptible to tooth decay, sensitivity and decay.
There is no cure for receding gums. Once a gum has receded, it’s gone forever.
- Poor oral hygiene. This attributed to improper brushing of teeth.
- Smoking leaves plaque to the gums and teeth.
- Hormonal changes. Fluctuations in hormones can make gums more susceptible to recede.
- Wrong method of brushing. Brushing towards the gum as opposed to brushing away from the gum. This will enhance gums being pushed further down.
- Abnormal growth or positioning of the tooth.
- Periodontal diseases.
- Bruxism (Grinding and clenching of the teeth).
- Aggressive flossing and brushing.
Gum recession is something that happens gradually and the tell-tale signs are sensitivity and longer teeth.
It’s good to go for dental checkup, say, every three to six months even when nothing is amiss so as to be on the lookout.
